Valentine's Day 2010: Sunday, February 14th

Valentine's Day: holy celebration for a Roman martyr? Invented by medieval poet Geoffrey Chaucer? A good time to be shot with an arrow by a man-child in a diaper? Who cares?! We love Valentine's day simply because it's a great excuse to tell somebody you love them. Nothing feels greater than that.

We speak many languages at The Flower Pot, so if you're having some fluency issues in Love, we can help you out. If you're a classic, you'll love our dozen red roses in a box. If your sweetie has a sweet tooth, our handmade chocolates are your solution. Is she a cuddler? The choice is obvious.
Not on the above list? You must be creative! Our Rose Kiss special allows you to put your own message on our high-quality coffee mug - up to 15 words. Nestled inside is an arrangement with a single red rose. Pack this personalized punch for only $29.95. Send it to her workplace for ultimate impact the week before V-Day: she can display the flowers, and later be reminded of your love every time she takes a sip of coffee or tea. But beware: colleagues may become jealous!

Flower vase

I was a farmer for a few years, and grew flowers for local markets… at that point I really learned how flowers filled a vase.

Here is a photo from yesterday of a recent vase I made… with some tulips!

Oh, and by the way… happy spring!

There are a lot of Purple Roses to buy now, but only a few have the deep and dark purple rose color that look so spectacular, especially when paired with white flowers.

This dark colored purple rose has velvety blooms that keeps on blooming and blooming. The rose bush has very few thorns, its almost thornless, and has handsome dark green foilage. The flowers are very fragrant, in fact I would say they have a strong wonderful rose scent.

This an old Gallica rose from 1840 and as such only blooms once, but the flowering is awesome and long-lasting, so this rose is worth its place in a garden. It is a compact rose bush.

Stop feeding this rose after August 1st. Pruning should be done right after flowering. No pruning in spring, or you will not have any flowers for that summer. Zones 4-8, height 3-4 feet.

It's a heat tolerant rose, so if you live where summers are hot, this rose is great choise for your garden.

Hybrid teas look great in borders and make ideal cutting roses. Zones 7-10, height 5 feet.

Purple And White Roses

There are no roses that are purple and white. However, planting purple roses with white roses, such as the white Iceberg rose or the white Fabulous rose, will make your purple roses really stand out and look fantastic.

I also like underplanting purple roses with the white miniature 'Gourmet Popcorn'. Just plant these mini roses in front of the purple roses and you will have a stunning looking flower bed.

Roses

They are classic, they are romantic, they are beautifully simple, and yet many women argue that they are too ordinary, too typical and claim to want "special" flowers. I too have been this woman, "Don't give me roses, I want something different!"

Roses have seemed to surround me lately, which is what has made me re-think my position on them.
I got them from a dear friend for my birthday (yellow, pink and white) and it was lovely to have them in the house. Then, the roommates BF dropped them off for her to get when she returned from a trip- they were purple- and lovely and romantic.
Seeing these made me think of the time the Boy surprised me with a dozen purple roses. I was surprised and excited and it may have come off as not as happy as he'd hoped. Regardless- I was. Unfortunately he gave them to me on a day I was traveling and I left them in the car accidentally and they of course died. I've always regretted that. Not only because I made him feel like I didn't like/want them, but because they were gorgeous flowers and I let them die without even getting to appreciate them!
Seeing the purple roses really made me want then again. Seeing the purple roses made me realize, roses are gorgeous, and a lovely lovely gift to receive. They still aren't my favorite flower, but I'll happily accept, appreciate and brag about getting them any day.

Rose Tattoos

Roses originated in ancient Persia and were historically viewed as a masculine flower, however several thousand years of cultivation produced many exquisite and beautiful variations associating it with females and love.

Greeks mythology described roses as being white until the goddess Aphrodite pricked herself on the thorns, and her blood drops turned the blossoms red. Even today people attach meaning and emotional qualities to roses.

How Do You Choose the Rose Tattoos Design?

Although most people associate flowers with women, the rose tattoo is one that's transcended the gender barriers and can be found almost equally on men and women. For most people, roses signify love, passion and emotion - so this design can be used in a number of different contexts.

The first thing you need to consider when choosing a rose tattoo design is whether you want the flower to be the main theme of your design, or simply an accent image in a much larger design. Whilethe rose is beautiful on its own, you can also incorporate it into another image to change the feel of the design. For example, adding a small rose image to a skull image can soften the design and even make a comment on the duality of life and death.

You'll also want to consider what color your rose tattoo will be. Of course, if the rose is standing on its own in your tattoo design, this is much more important than if it will be part of a larger, more colorful image. If you're choosing to feature the rose, you'll want to choose a color that's compatible with your skin tone, and that creates the type of feeling you're going for. Many people automatically assume that rose tattoos should be red, but using yellows, oranges and even purples can be just as pleasing in design - and may even look better and last longer.

To get a better feel for some of the rose tattoo designs that are available, look around the internet to see how other people have used this image. There's actually a huge range of styles, from a single rose flower, to several roses bunched together, to rose images that incorporate the leaves and stems of the flower. It's important to think carefully about which style suits you best before you head to the tattoo parlor.
